How much space do you need for your move, renovation, or household goods? With our free storage calculator, you can calculate in 2 minutes how many cubic meters (m3) you need and which storage unit is best for you to rent.
Enter the number of rooms in your home, or select specific items such as sofas, cabinets, and boxes. The calculator immediately provides advice on the correct storage size and a price indication. This way, you never rent too much or too little space, whether you are looking for temporary storage or for a longer period.
How does the storage calculator work?
The ALLSAFE storage calculator works in three steps:
Step 1: Choose your calculation method Select how you want to calculate: based on the rooms in your home, the number of moving boxes, specific items (furniture, appliances), or enter the desired number of m³ directly if you already know it.
Step 2: Enter your details Add your belongings to the calculation. The more specific you are, the more precise the result. Don’t forget large items such as sofas, cabinets, mattresses, and white goods (appliances).
Step 3: Receive your advice The calculator immediately shows how many m³ you need, which storage unit fits your situation, and an indication of the monthly costs. This includes an overview of ALLSAFE locations in your area.
Rules of thumb: how much m³ of storage space do you need?
No time to fill everything in? Use these rules of thumb to quickly estimate how much storage space you need:
| Ruimte | Geschikt voor spullen uit een | Vanaf/weekprijs |
| 1-3 m³ | Closet | € 1,40,- |
| 4-12 m³ | 1 room | € 6,- |
| 13-24 m³ | 2-3 rooms | € 12,- |
| 25-54 m³ | Terraced house | € 18,- |
| 55-120 m³ | Large house | € 35,- |
Tip: Calculate an extra 10% of space for walkways and to ensure items remain easily accessible. A storage unit packed to the ceiling is difficult to access.
What is the difference between m² and m³?
When it comes to storage space, we calculate in cubic meters (m³), not square meters (m²). This represents the volume of the space: $length \times width \times height$.
For example, a storage unit or garage box that is 2 meters wide, 2 meters deep, and 3 meters high has a volume of 12 m³ ($2 \times 2 \times 3 = 12$). This is important to know because you can also stack your belongings.
Some providers list the floor area in m². Be careful: a unit with a floor area of 4 m² can have a volume of 12 m³ if the height is 3 meters. At ALLSAFE, we always calculate in m³, so you know exactly how much you can store.
What fits in a storage unit?
To give you an idea of what fits into various storage sizes:
1-3 m³ – Closet
Fits: Seasonal items, boxes of clothing, and, for example, sports equipment. Comparable to a large closet.
4-12 m³ – 1 Room
Fits: The contents of one room or a student room. Think of a bed, desk, chairs, and boxes.
13-24 m³ – 2-3 Rooms
Fits: The contents of an apartment or studio. Suitable for household storage during a move or renovation.
25-54 m³ – Eengezinswoning
Fits: The full contents of a single-family home, including large furniture such as sofas, cabinets, and a dining table.
55-120 m³ – Grote woning
Fits: The full contents of, for example, a corner house or a detached home, including furniture.
Calculate storage space for specific items
Do you have a special item you want to store? Here are the required cubic meters for common large items:
| Item | Ruimte | Opmerking |
| Piano | 2-3 m³ | Transport upright, do not stack. |
| Grand Piano | 3-5 m³ | Preferably disassemble. |
| Motorcycle or scooter | 2-3 m³ | Empty fuel and disconnect the battery. |
| Auto (sedan) | 12-15 m³ | Parking space (outdoor) or storage in a garage. |
| Caravan | 20-35 m³ | Parking space (outdoor). |
| Boot (tot 6 m) | 15-25 m³ | Parking space (outdoor). |
| Jetski | 9-12 m³ | Parking space (outdoor). |
| Fiets | 0,5-1 m³ | Can be hung on the wall if necessary. |
| Wasmachine / droger | 1 m³ | Per item. |
| Koelkast | 1 m³ | Clean and leave the door slightly ajar. |
Tip: Combine these items with your regular household goods in the calculator for a total calculation.
Calculating storage space for a move
Are you moving and do you need temporary storage? The required storage space is directly related to the size of your move. Here is the breakdown:
| Woningtype | Opslagruimte | Verhuiswagen |
| Student room | 3-6 m3 | Small van (9m3) |
| 2-room apartment | 12-15 m3 | Moving van (18m3) |
| 3-room apartment | 18-24 m3 | Large moving truck (28m3) |
| Single-family home | 30-54 m3 | Truck (54m3+) or moving van multiple trips |
| Large home | 54-90 m3 | Vrachtwagen (90m3+) or moving van multiple trips |
At ALLSAFE, for storage units of 6 m³ or more, you get free use of our moving van (2-4 hours, 50 km free) and we offer a pick-up and delivery service. This way, you arrange your move and storage all at once.
Rent a storage unit or rent a container?
Are you doubting between a storage unit at ALLSAFE or a shipping container on-site? These are the most important differences in terms of costs and features:
| Feature | ALLSAFE Storage Unit | Shipping Container |
| Heated | Yes | No |
| Security | Alarm + camera 24/7 | Lock |
| Flexible | 1 tot 120m3 | Fixed sizes |
| Access | 24/7 | Depending on location |
| Notice period | Per week | Per month |
In short: A storage unit at ALLSAFE is more affordable and safer for valuable items. A container on-site can be convenient if you need daily access and the space is available.
Tips for Smart Storage and Saving Space
By using these tips, you can maximize your storage space and potentially rent a smaller (and cheaper) unit:
-
Disassemble furniture: Take apart table legs, bed frames, and wardrobes to save a significant amount of space.
-
Utilize the height: Stack boxes and light items all the way to the ceiling, placing heavy boxes at the bottom.
-
Fill hollow spaces: Put blankets, pillows, or clothing inside drawers, washing machines, and cabinets.
-
Use uniform boxes: Moving boxes of the same size stack much easier than a random assortment of boxes.
-
Create a floor plan: Draw a layout beforehand and place items you need frequently at the front.
-
Leave a walkway: Keep a 50 cm path clear so you can reach items at the back.
-
Stack furniture cleverly: Place sofas upright against the wall, lay mattresses flat on top of cabinets, and use chairs as ‘shelves’ for boxes.
Calculating Business Storage Space
The calculator can also be used for business storage. Here are some rules of thumb for common business situations:
Archive Storage:
-
100 binders = approximately 1 m³.
-
A small office archive (500 binders) fits in 6 m³.
-
A medium-sized archive (1,000+ binders) requires 12 m³.
Webshop Inventory:
-
Small products (clothing, accessories): 15 m³ for 500+ items.
-
Larger products (furniture, appliances): 36-54 m³.
Office Inventory:
-
Desks, chairs, cabinets.
-
Estimate 2-3 m³ per workstation.
-
An office with 30 workstations requires 66-90 m³.
Seasonal Stock:
-
Hospitality inventory, event equipment, showroom models.
-
Variable – use the calculator for an estimate.

Frequently asked questions about calculating storage space
For an average 2-3 room apartment, you need 13-24 m³. For a studio or 1-room apartment, 6-12 m³ is sufficient. Use the calculator for an exact calculation based on your belongings.
The easiest way is our free storage calculator. Enter your rooms or specific items and you will receive immediate advice. You can also use rules of thumb: count on at least 6 m³ per room.
m² (square meters) is floor area (length × width), m³ (cubic meters) is volume (length × width × height). In storage, we calculate in m³ because you can also utilize the height by stacking. A unit of 4 m² with a height of 3 meters has a volume of 12 m³.
For a 3-room apartment (18-24 m³ volume), a 24 m³ moving van is sufficient for a single trip. At ALLSAFE, you get free use of our moving van with storage units from 6 m³ upwards.
An upright piano takes up 1-2 m³, while a grand piano takes up 3-6 m³. Important: always store a piano in a heated space to prevent damage to the wood and strings. All ALLSAFE units are heated as standard.
Often, yes. A 12 m³ storage unit costs approximately €75/month, while an on-site container costs €80-120 plus transport costs. A storage unit is also heated and secure, which is important for furniture and electronics. You can also turn to ALLSAFE for furniture storage.
For an average single-family home (terraced house), you need 30-36 m³. For a detached home including the contents of a garage, this can increase to 42-54 m³.
Yes, the calculator also works for business storage. Select ‘Business storage’ to calculate space for archives, office inventory, or stock. Rule of thumb: 100 binders = approximately 1 m³.
Yes, the calculator is completely free and non-binding. You don’t have to leave any personal details. Immediately after filling it in, you will see how many m³ you need and what the indicative costs are.
The calculator provides a good indication based on averages. The more specific your input, the better the result. When in doubt, we always advise 10% extra space for walkways and convenience.
In that case, use the calculation method based on rooms. The calculator automatically calculates using the average number of boxes per room. You can always adjust this later.
