When is temporary storage useful during a move?

Temporary storage gives you a secure place for your belongings before, during or after a house move. It can make the moving process easier in several situations.

When your moving dates do not match

Sometimes you must leave your old home before you receive the keys to your new one. A temporary storage unit keeps your furniture, moving boxes and household belongings together during the period between homes.

Because you can rent from one week and cancel weekly, you do not have to commit to a long fixed rental period.

When preparing your home for sale

A quieter and less crowded home can be easier to photograph, view and present to potential buyers. By temporarily storing furniture, boxes and personal belongings, you create more space without having to throw things away.

Once your home has been sold, you can collect your belongings or keep them in storage until your new home is ready.

When renovating before moving in

Is your new home still being painted, renovated or repaired? Storing your belongings elsewhere helps protect them from dust, paint and building materials. It also keeps the rooms clear, allowing contractors to work more efficiently.

When downsizing

Moving into a smaller home often means you cannot take everything with you immediately. Temporary storage gives you time to decide what you want to keep, sell, donate or pass on.

This prevents your new home from becoming overcrowded from the moment you move in.

When moving in stages

You may prefer to move gradually rather than transport everything on one day. A storage unit allows you to move less frequently used belongings first and collect them later.

This can be especially helpful when moving a large household or combining two homes.

What can you store during a house move?

You can use temporary moving storage for many household belongings, including:

  • Moving boxes
  • Furniture
  • Clothing
  • Books and personal belongings
  • Kitchen equipment
  • Household appliances
  • Sports equipment
  • Garden furniture
  • Seasonal belongings
  • Home office items

Pack fragile belongings carefully and use strong boxes that can be stacked. Disassembling large furniture can also help you use the available storage space more efficiently.

How much temporary storage space do you need?

The right unit size depends on the number of belongings you have and how efficiently they can be packed.

  • 1–3 m3: suitable for boxes, clothing and smaller belongings
  • 4–12 m3: suitable for the contents of one room or a student room
  • 13–24 m3: suitable for a studio, apartment or several rooms
  • 25–54 m3: suitable for the contents of a family home
  • 55–120 m3: suitable for a large household or multiple storage needs

These sizes are only an indication. Furniture that can be disassembled and boxes that can be stacked generally require less space.

Use the ALLSAFE storage calculator for a personalized estimate before choosing your unit.
