4 Tips for Moving In Together

4 Tips for Moving In Together Moving tips

Are you planning to move in together soon, or have you recently started living with your partner? Moving in together can be exciting, but it can also bring a few challenges. Have you already discussed the interior, dividing your belongings, household finances and a cohabitation agreement? Here are four practical tips for moving in together.

1. Agree on Household Tasks and Finances

Many disagreements between couples who live together are about household chores and money. Who does the laundry, empties the dishwasher or vacuums the house? Making clear agreements about these tasks—and sticking to them—can prevent a lot of unnecessary arguments.

Finances can also become a source of tension when moving in together. Discuss who pays for which expenses, whether you want to open a joint bank account and which costs should be paid from your personal or shared accounts.

Clear agreements will help both of you understand what is expected and make managing your shared household easier.

2. Draw Up a Cohabitation Agreement

You may be completely in love and expect to stay together for the rest of your lives, but it can still be sensible to draw up a cohabitation agreement.

A cohabitation agreement allows you to formally record arrangements concerning money, possessions and the home. It can also state who is entitled to remain in the property if the relationship ends.

A cohabitation agreement is particularly important if you own a home together, have children or want to make arrangements in case one partner unexpectedly passes away. Depending on your situation and local legislation, additional legal documents may also be required. It is therefore advisable to seek professional legal advice.

3. Create a Shared Mood Board for Your Interior

You should both feel comfortable and at home in your shared property. Before you start buying furniture and decorating, create a mood board together.

Collect images of interiors, colours, materials and styles that appeal to both of you. This will make it easier to identify your shared preferences and reduce disagreements while visiting furniture shops or choosing paint and accessories.

A shared mood board helps you create an interior that reflects both of your personalities.

4. Decide What to Do With Duplicate Belongings

Moving in together often means ending up with duplicate household items. You may have several beds, sofas, tables, kitchen appliances and sets of cookware, while there is not enough room for everything in your shared home.

Decide which belongings will move into the new property and what should happen to the remaining items. There are several options:

  • Sell or give away items you are unlikely to use again
  • Store duplicate belongings temporarily until you need them in the future

Many people feel it would be a shame to get rid of good-quality furniture and possessions immediately. At ALLSAFE Mini Storage, you can store these items flexibly and affordably until you need them again.

You can also use the storage unit for seasonal belongings, such as Christmas decorations, winter sports equipment and seasonal clothing. This allows you to begin your new life together in a clean, spacious and organised home.

All that remains for us to say is: we wish you every happiness together!
