Handy storage tips for your Christmas decorations! Tips for cleanup and storage

The festive season is over, which means it is time to return to everyday life. The official day to take down the Christmas tree is 6 January, also known as Epiphany, although many people will already do so during the weekend of 3 January. But where should you store all your Christmas decorations, and how can you keep them in good condition? In this blog, we share some useful storage tips!

Where should you store your Christmas decorations?

You can never be too careful when storing Christmas decorations. Every year, a few baubles seem to break while being unpacked or put away. Some baubles may also have a special meaning, such as your baby’s first Christmas bauble, one you received from a loved one or decorations made by your children or grandchildren.

These decorations can therefore have great sentimental value, so it is important to store them carefully. In addition, you may also have many other Christmas items, ranging from artificial trees and mistletoe to festive tableware.

Choose a place where you can store everything safely, where the items are unlikely to be damaged and where they will not get in the way. Christmas decorations can quickly take up a lot of space. Suitable storage locations may include the attic, a spare storage room or an external storage unit.

Create more space at home

Did you know that most Dutch households choose an artificial Christmas tree? An artificial tree can be found in 53% of living rooms. As a result, many Christmas trees need to be stored again instead of being thrown away.

You will not use your artificial tree and decorations for the rest of the year, so try to make sure they take up as little space as possible. Choose a corner of the room where you want to store them and remove the belongings currently kept there.

Decide which of these items you use frequently, which you rarely use and which you no longer use at all. This is also a great New Year’s resolution that can help you keep your home tidier and more spacious. Throw away or donate anything you no longer use and find another place for the remaining belongings. Items that are only used once or twice a year can, for example, be stored in a shed or garage.

It may be even easier to store these belongings outside your home. Together with your artificial tree and other Christmas decorations, they can be placed in a storage unit. You can rent a unit starting from just one cubic metre, which can hold approximately twelve moving boxes filled with Christmas decorations.

This keeps your decorations safe, prevents them from getting in the way at home and allows you to use your living space differently throughout the year.

How to prevent your Christmas baubles from getting damaged

After Christmas decorations have been used several times, their original packaging is often damaged or lost. Below are several practical ways to store your baubles and Christmas lights carefully:

  • Egg cartons are a practical and inexpensive way to store smaller Christmas baubles.
  • Affordable but sturdy plastic storage boxes are ideal when you have a large collection of baubles. Place a layer of cardboard on the bottom, followed by a layer of baubles. Add another layer of cardboard and then another layer of baubles. This keeps everything together and helps prevent damage. For an even cheaper option, you can use sturdy moving boxes.
  • For extra protection, use the dividers from glassware boxes and place them inside your storage boxes.
  • A slightly more expensive option is to purchase special Christmas bauble storage boxes from shops such as IKEA or Blokker.
  • Do your Christmas lights always become tangled in storage? Wrap shorter strings of lights around a piece of cardboard so you never have to untangle them again.
