How can you best store your party clothes?
Tips for cleanup and storage
December is the month when party clothes truly take centre stage, with galas, parties, Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations. Women in particular often want to buy a new outfit every year. But what is the best way to store these clothes, keep them looking beautiful and maintain a clear overview of your entire wardrobe? In this blog, we explain how to do this in three simple steps!
Step 1: Choose a suitable place for your party clothes
An evening gown, cocktail dress, tuxedo or even a worn wedding dress is not something you simply throw away. These special garments often hold a great deal of sentimental value. They may remind you of your own wedding, a wonderful Christmas spent with friends and family or a special birthday celebration.
When you also consider how much effort you put into finding the perfect outfit and how much money you spent on it, it is clear that party clothes should be stored carefully. Research by Fashionscene shows that two-thirds of women buy a new outfit especially for the festive season every year. Most women spend around €100 on it. Therefore, choose a storage location where your clothes cannot be damaged by moisture, moths or other causes.
Step 2: Sort your clothes
Create space for your party clothes by reorganising the everyday clothes and seasonal clothes in your wardrobe or on your clothing rack. Sort your clothes into three piles:
- Clothes you wear regularly
- Clothes you wear occasionally, such as seasonal clothing
- Clothes you never wear
You can give away or sell the clothes in the third pile, or donate them to a charity shop. You will need to find another place for the remaining clothes. For example, you could store the clothes you only wear occasionally in a climate-controlled storage unit. Think of this space as an external wardrobe: your clothes are stored carefully and neatly, while remaining accessible whenever you need them.
Would you like to create your own mini walk-in wardrobe or showroom for your party clothes? You can also apply the same three-category system to other belongings in your home. This makes it much easier to free up an entire room for your clothing collection.
Step 3: Store your party clothes carefully and stylishly
Would you like to store your clothes in a stylish way? Consider using a suspended clothing rack. At the 2014 Woonbeurs interior design fair, we spotted a creative idea by Ariadne. Find a fallen branch in the woods, allow it to dry and paint it white or another colour of your choice. Suspend it from the ceiling using ropes, and you will have a unique and atmospheric clothing rack.
You can also attach individual steel pipes to the wall. This allows you to position your clothing rack at any height you prefer.
Naturally, you can display your most beautiful pieces on a dress form or mannequin, allowing you to admire them every day. Looking for something a little more unusual? Wedding dresses, evening gowns, gala dresses and tuxedos can also be framed. Ask a professional picture framer for a deep box frame, and you can display your favourite garment as an original piece of wall decoration.
For maximum protection, you can use special garment bags or wardrobe boxes. By hanging your party clothes inside them, you can help protect them against dust, creases and damage. These special wardrobe boxes are available in the shops at selected ALLSAFE locations.
Finally, remember to protect your clothes against moths. Moths can damage wool, fur, feathers and leather products. Shoes and belts may also be affected. Make sure you use mothballs or another suitable moth-control product.
