How can you store your wine stylishly at home?
Tips for cleanup and storage
The festive season is just around the corner: days filled with delicious food and wine. More and more people in the Netherlands are drinking wine. Research shows that 74% of Dutch adults occasionally enjoy a glass of Chardonnay, Merlot or Sauvignon Blanc. During the festive season, people also tend to buy much more wine than usual. But where are you going to store your wine when your kitchen or pantry is already full of food for the holidays? In this blog post, we share some fun and atmospheric ideas!
What will become your wine room?
Did you know that drinking wine can be good for your health? Wine may help protect against certain types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia and strokes (Source: Voedingscentrum). So don’t hesitate to stock up on wine!
Wine can also have emotional or social value because of its unique aroma, flavour and appearance, bringing back beautiful memories. In addition, you probably spent both time and money selecting your wines, so it is nice to choose a place in your home where they can be clearly seen. This way, they are easy to access, help create atmosphere and can be proudly shown off to friends and family. The living room or open-plan kitchen is a great place to display your bottles. If your wine collection is very large, you could of course use a separate room or the cellar for wine storage.
Create space for your wine collection
Now that you have chosen a place for your wine, it is time to make room for it. Decide which belongings you want to keep and get rid of items you no longer use. Do you feel like you simply have too many things once your wine collection takes centre stage?
One solution is to store some of your belongings in a storage unit, so you can still access them whenever you want without them getting in the way. Do you have so much wine that you no longer want or are able to store it at home? You can also store your wine affordably in an external wine storage facility, where it can be kept cool and dark so the flavour is preserved as well as possible.
Wine can actually become more delicious and more valuable as it ages. To illustrate this: the top 10 most expensive wines ranged from €75,000 to €228,201, with the oldest dating back to 1787 and the “newest” to 1947. So it can also pay off to buy wine at a good price and keep it for many years.
Use your wine collection to create atmosphere in your home
The next step is creating atmosphere. There are many ways to store your wine bottles: place a few beautiful bottles on the corner of the dining table, on sideboards or in a cabinet, buy a wine rack, or be a little more daring and use an old authentic wine barrel to create your own wine bar. If you are handy, you could even make one yourself: cut out part of the side of the barrel and attach hinges so it becomes a door. Place a round shelf inside the barrel to create space for wine bottles and wine glasses. If DIY is not your thing, you can of course also find these wine barrels online.
Another fun option is to use old pallets, for example leftover ones from a renovation project. Click here for examples!
Do you have even more wine to store? Use the empty space under the stairs to create your own wine cabinet. If you really want an authentic wine cellar and have a suitable room or basement under your house, store your wine horizontally in racks along the walls and place a table with a few chairs in the middle. That way, you can enjoy your wine in peace and comfort. Nowadays, you can also buy a special wine climate cabinet or wine fridge that looks stylish and takes up little space. Search online and you will find plenty of options. You can also check out our Pinterest page for more inspiring and atmospheric wine storage ideas!
