Moving House: How Do You Bring Order to Your Home?

Moving house can be very stressful. How many moving boxes do you need? Which belongings should you take with you, and which ones should you leave behind? How can you furnish your new home in a tidy and organized way? In this blog, you will find three steps to help you stay organized during your move.

Step 1: Order Enough Moving Boxes

When you are moving, you need enough boxes to pack all your belongings. A two-person household uses an average of 30 to 40 moving boxes for smaller items. You do not want to overfill your boxes, so order enough to make sure you do not run out.

To save money and space, choose sturdy moving boxes with a higher load capacity. They can hold more, meaning you will need fewer boxes overall. For heavy books, for example, you can use extra-strong archive boxes that can hold up to 25 books.

Decide in advance which room each box should go to in your new home and clearly label its destination. This will help you stay organized and prevent you from having to search for your belongings later.

Nowadays, you can also rent moving boxes at an affordable price. These boxes are made from durable plastic, delivered to your home and collected again after the move. You do not even need tape. This means you do not have to worry about buying, storing or disposing of moving boxes, and you will not be left with piles of empty boxes after moving day.

Step 2: Create Space and Gain an Extra Room

Once you have enough moving boxes, decide which belongings you want to take from your old home to your new one. Moving is the perfect opportunity to sort through your possessions.

It would be a shame if your new home immediately became filled with items you only use once or twice a year. On average, these belongings take up around 10 square metres of living space, which is about the size of a guest room. Having fewer items in your home creates more space and may even give you an extra room you had not previously considered.

Divide your belongings into three groups:

1. Items you use regularly
2. Items you never use and can throw away, sell or donate
3. Items you want to keep but rarely use

Do not immediately get rid of the third group. Seventeen per cent of people in the Netherlands have regretted throwing away something valuable during a move. This may include photo albums, hobby supplies, tools, Christmas decorations or party items. Although you may only use these belongings a few times a year, they can take up a lot of space at home.

To create more room in your new home, consider storing these items in an external storage unit. This allows you to use the extra space in your home for the room you have always dreamed of.

Step 3: Give Your Moving Boxes a Second Life

Moving boxes can still be useful after your move. You can reuse some of them to store belongings in the attic or in your storage unit.

You can also decorate the boxes and use them as attractive storage containers inside your home. Paint or spray-paint them, or cover them with coloured paper to give them a new look. You can then place them inside a cupboard and use them to store bedding, clothing, hobby materials and many other items without anyone noticing that they were once moving boxes.
