4 Tips for Furnishing Your Student Room

4 Tips for Furnishing Your Student Room Living tips

You are moving into a student room, or perhaps you already have! On average, a student room is around 16 square metres, but in cities such as Amsterdam and Utrecht, rooms are often even smaller. How can you furnish your student room so that everything fits? And how can you still maintain enough living space when your room is particularly small? Read all the tips in this blog and discover how to furnish your student room as efficiently and comfortably as possible.

1. You do not need all your belongings every day or every week

It all starts with preserving space. Do not fill your student room with everything you own. When you have lots of belongings lying around, your room will quickly appear much smaller.

Think carefully about which items you actually use regularly. You probably do not need everything every day or even every week. Consider your summer wardrobe during winter and vice versa, winter sports equipment, regular sports gear, themed party outfits, games and study books from a previous semester. You do not want to throw these items away, but they still take up valuable space that could be used more effectively.

One solution is to store these belongings in a small storage unit. At ALLSAFE Mini Storage, you can rent a small storage space from as little as €1.40 per week. This provides enough room for around twelve moving boxes. You can access your belongings seven days a week between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.

This is much more affordable than renting a larger student room, assuming you can even find one. In Amsterdam, for example, you may pay around €36 per square metre per month. That is significantly more expensive than approximately €6 per month at ALLSAFE. Another smart option is to rent a larger storage unit together with your housemates. This allows you to share the costs while storing more belongings.

2. Smart furniture for furnishing your student room

Save space in your student room by choosing multifunctional furniture. A sofa bed is a good example. During the day, you can use it to relax, and at night, you can unfold it into a double bed. Many sofa beds also include built-in storage space for bedding and pillows.

A loft bed is another space-saving option, especially if your room has a high ceiling. You can place a desk, seating area or wardrobe underneath the bed. You also do not necessarily need both a desk and a dining table. A dining table can also be used as a study space.

A common mistake among students is buying a large bookcase for all their study books and materials. Such a bookcase takes up a lot of space, and as mentioned earlier, you do not need every book throughout the entire year.

For the books you currently use, wall-mounted shelves are often a better solution. Shelves above your bed or desk provide enough storage space without taking up valuable floor space. You can also decorate them with plants, vases and photo frames to make your room feel more homely.

For other belongings, you can use practical and affordable storage boxes that fit underneath your bed or on top of your wardrobe. Affordable and sturdy storage boxes are available from Goedkopeopbergbox.nl. The website offers boxes with or without wheels, under-bed storage boxes and airtight storage containers.

Tip: when you place an order, you will receive a voucher for one month of free storage at ALLSAFE Mini Storage.

3. How to make your student room look bigger

In addition to saving space, you can use several interior design tricks to make your student room appear larger:

  • Use light colours.
  • Add vertical lines or patterns to the walls.
  • Keep the view from the door to the window clear.
  • Place large mirrors in the room.
  • Choose low furniture.

4. Fresh air and stress-free studying in your student room

Fresh air is especially important in a small student room or bedroom. In addition to airing the room every day, you can improve the atmosphere by adding plants.

Did you know that indoor plants can also create a calming environment and may help reduce feelings of stress? They are therefore a great addition to a room where you spend a lot of time studying and relaxing.

With these tips, you can furnish your small student room effectively while preserving as much space as possible. Do you have any additional tips? Share them in the comments below!
