Winter daylight savings has started! 4 garden ideas for the winter
This weekend it was that time of year again: daylight savings has ended and winter time has begun! Even though the days are getting shorter, colder, and darker, there is still plenty to enjoy during the winter months. Right now you might only be thinking about staying indoors, but with our best garden ideas, you’ll be heading outside with pleasure this winter too.
We previously wrote in our blog about garden maintenance in winter to preserve your plants, lawn, and patio set properly. However, getting your garden winter-ready isn’t just about preserving it, you obviously want to be able to enjoy it as well!
Green thumbs, colourful garden ideas
In winter, your garden can easily lose some of its colour. Many flowers and plants might not survive the frost and end up looking bare. With a little bit of research, however, this doesn’t have to be the case at all! To save you some searching, you’ll find the most colourful garden ideas below.
-
Winter heather: Colourful and winter-proof. These plants bloom from roughly December to April and are also easy to maintain. You might know the plant in bloom for its lilac colour, but there are also red, pink, and white varieties. This allows you to instantly add some colour variation to your garden design.
-
Witch hazel & Wintersweet: Other plants that bloom in winter are witch hazel and wintersweet (also known by its botanical name Chimonanthus praecox). These plants look somewhat similar due to their yellowish colour. Wintersweet has a slightly more classic flower shape, whereas witch hazel features playful, ribbon-like petals. Don’t underestimate these petalsthey contain a natural kind of ‘antifreeze’!
-
Winter pansies: Is a complete garden overhaul a bit too much, and are you looking for a nice little flower for a pot on the table? Winter pansies are small flowering plants that brighten up your garden with a wide variety of colours. The name says it all: they can certainly handle a splash of winter cold.
Extra garden advice: To make the flowers stand out even better in your garden, place them in a beautiful pot. That is at least as decorative as the flowers themselves (and certainly won’t lose any colour ;)). To protect the pot from cracking due to frost, you can line the inside with bubble wrap.
Cozy winter seating area
Now that everything is in bloom, it’s time for your garden styling. You naturally enjoy your garden even more if you can sit outside comfortably. Decorating your garden isn’t something you can only do in summer; there are plenty of great garden ideas for creating a cozy winter seating area.
This cozy spot starts with suitable furniture. It is often recommended to store your garden furniture in a dry place during winter or cover it with a protective tarp. The latter is a shame, of course: you can no longer use your seating set, and it doesn’t make your garden look very inviting.
The items that can’t handle the winter weather can be safely stored in a climate-controlled unit at ALLSAFE, but in the meantime, you don’t have to leave your garden bare. By switching between summer and winter furniture, your belongings stay in good condition and usable. Here are a few tips on what to look for when purchasing a patio set for the winter months:
-
Rattan & Bamboo: Furniture made of materials like rattan or bamboo is very vulnerable to frost.
-
Wood: With wood, it varies per type whether it is suitable for wintering outdoors. Pine dries out quickly, for example, but hardwood can handle the winter just fine.
-
Synthetic, Metal & Aluminium: Plastics, metal, or aluminium are suitable materials and can easily be left outside.
Regardless of which material you end up choosing, sitting comfortably is always important. But cushions outside in winter? Absolutely! You’re better off storing your summer cushions, but with all-weather cushions, you can perfectly furnish your outdoor spot. This way, you can prepare your garden for winter in full comfort.
Garden ideas to keep you warm
Brrr, perhaps the most important thing if you want to use your winter patio: how do you stay warm? 😉 First of all, you’ll need to have or build a small shelter or canopy to block cold gusts of wind. On top of that, your patio set will be protected from rain and snow right away (and you too, of course).
If you really want to enjoy all your garden ideas in winter, a patio heater will come in very handy. Chances are that hot chocolate alone won’t keep your body warm enough. Heaters come in various shapes and sizes, allowing you to choose one that best fits your seating area. As soon as that extra heat is no longer needed in spring, you can store it back at ALLSAFE until next winter.
What might be even better than electric heating is warming yourself up by a campfire! A cast-iron fire pit near your seating area keeps you warm and adds an incredible amount of atmosphere. Fire pits are easy to move around, and with a small grill grate on top, you instantly have a winter BBQ!
Let it shine! Brilliant garden ideas
Sad that it gets dark so early again? Not at all! Atmospheric lighting and candles make your garden feel extra cozy during the darker months. These final garden ideas will make your winter garden complete.
-
String lights: Hanging lights in trees, bushes, and plants isn’t just for Christmas—it works great all winter long. That one tree that looks a bit bare can be brought back to life by hanging a string of fairy lights in it. Just make sure when buying lighting that you check whether the lights are suitable for outdoor use.
-
Candles: You can never have too many: candles, candles, candles. You can place candles of different heights together on a tray, or use lantern holders to display the light even more beautifully. The great thing about holders is that you can hang them up as well!
To make all these garden ideas a reality, you’ll naturally want to store part of your summer gear. With a storage unit at ALLSAFE, you’ll have plenty of space in your garden to create your winter wonderland and enough room at home to comfortably sit indoors as well. If it ever gets too cold outside, you can always enjoy your garden right through the window!
