“When my son moved out, I suddenly got a whole room to myself” – Tessa (45) on creating space and letting go

“When my son moved out, I suddenly got a whole room to myself” – Tessa (45) on creating space and letting go Renovate

It’s summer. Moving vans are buzzing through student cities. For Tessa (45) from Almere, the time had come too: her son was moving out to his own student room.

“The house suddenly felt so much quieter,” Tessa recalls. “During those first few days, I kept walking into his old room. The smell of his aftershave was still there, his books were still on the shelves. It was a strange mix of pride and a little sadness. But I also started thinking: what do I do with this space now?”

From empty room to clutter zone

Like many parents, Tessa first thought: Let’s just leave everything as it is. For when he would come home on weekends. But soon, boxes started to appear.

“I put a couple of moving boxes in there with things I just wanted out of the way. But before I knew it, it turned into a storage dump. That didn’t feel right at all. I wanted this change to bring something positive.”

I work from home a few days a week. How nice would it be to do that in a calm, cosy room instead of at the kitchen table?

The plan: a fresh start

Tessa decided to transform the room into a bright, multifunctional space: a guest room and a home office.
“I work from home a few days a week. How nice would it be to do that in a calm, cosy room instead of at the kitchen table?”

But then came the practical issue: what to do with all the stuff? Old school supplies, sports bags, a wardrobe full of winter clothes, stacks of books and boxes filled with childhood memories. “Far too valuable to throw away, but I didn’t want it cluttering up the room anymore.”

The discovery: renting storage space at ALLSAFE

On a friend’s recommendation, Tessa started searching online for temporary storage in Almere. That’s how she found ALLSAFE Mini Storage Almere Buiten.

“I always thought renting storage would be complicated or really expensive. But I was genuinely surprised: it was affordable, flexible, and I could start the very same day.”

The location was just a ten-minute drive from her home. “That mattered to me. Knowing I could quickly get to my things whenever I needed to gave me peace of mind.”

The First Visit

Tessa made a reservation online and went by the same afternoon.
“It was super easy. I was warmly welcomed and immediately given a tour. She called it a space journey. Everything was clean, well-lit, and secure. I could use carts, lifts, and even a trailer or van for free.”

She chose a storage unit of 8 m³. “Big enough for all the boxes and my son’s sports equipment. Everything fit perfectly.”

Making Space at Home: The Result

With the boxes, sports bags, and books safely stored at ALLSAFE, Tessa could get to work on the room.
She bought a single bed, placed a stylish desk, and filled the room with large green plants.
“It now feels light, calm, and yet cozy. My son likes that the room isn’t empty, but a nice place where he can still sleep when he visits.”

Watching your children leave the nest is quite emotional. Clearing out their room feels a bit like closing a chapter.

For Tessa, it was more than just moving her belongings

💡 Tessa’s Tips for Other Parents

Tessa shares three pieces of advice for parents in the same situation:

  1. Take photos of the room before you start clearing it out. “This way you preserve the memories without having to keep everything physically.

  2. Label boxes by category. “You’ll find everything faster, and it feels more organized.”

  3. Choose storage close to home with flexible opening hours. “Then you know you can always grab something quickly when you need it.”

More Than Just Storage

What Tessa didn’t know is that ALLSAFE offers more than just storage space:

  • Free use of a moving van or trailer

  • Sale of sturdy moving boxes and packing materials

  • Safe and clean, with 24/7 security for every storage unit

“It felt like I got a piece of my home back. And I didn’t have to say goodbye to items that are important to me.”

A Fresh Start This Summer

Summer is the time when many young people move out. And that means many parents suddenly have an extra room.

“I can recommend it to anyone,” says Tessa. “Turn the empty room into something that makes you happy. A workspace, a hobby room, a guest room… And use storage to make the transition easier.”
