How can you create more space in a small home? Read on for more tips!

More than six in ten Dutch people live in a smaller home than they would ideally like. When you own a lot of belongings, it can be difficult to furnish a relatively small space. However, many people do not realise that even a small home can feel spacious. Use these four practical interior design tips to make your home feel more open and appear larger in no time. You can live much more spaciously than you might think!

Tip 1: Use light colours in your interior

Dark colours and patterns can make a room look smaller. Light colours and natural shades, such as white and light grey, create a more spacious appearance because they reflect light. Choose light-coloured flooring as well. Keep the walls and furniture light and use few or no patterns.

Tip 2: Keep walkways and sightlines clear

Make sure the entrance to your home immediately creates an open and welcoming impression. Remove bags, boxes and other items from walkways. The same applies to the rest of your home. Items that block pathways and sightlines can make a space feel smaller.

Horizontal lines can make a room appear wider. For example, hang a panoramic photograph or painting and place a sofa against the shorter wall of the room. This helps create a more spacious effect.

Tip 3: Less is more

Avoid filling the rooms in your home with large pieces of furniture. When furnishing your space, remember that a modest, narrow sofa may work better than a deep, king-size corner sofa.

Small decorative items, such as candle holders, ornaments and vases, can make a room feel cluttered and cramped. In a smaller space, it is best to use mainly functional furniture. This creates an even greater sense of space when you can see underneath or through the furniture. For example, choose a sofa or table with raised legs or a table with a glass top. This keeps sightlines open and unobstructed.

You could also choose to store items that you do not use every day in an external storage unit.

Tip 4: Mirror, mirror, everywhere!

Mirrors reflect light and create a more spacious effect, so you can never have too many of them. When arranging your room, remember that placing mirrors opposite a window will make the space appear even larger.

With these small adjustments, you can make your “small” home feel more spacious in no time. Enjoy!
