How Do You Store Your Valuable Record Collection? Check it out for tips!
60% of people in the Netherlands have a collection, but 20% of these collectors do not have enough space at home to expand it. Do you have a special collection but limited space? On our blog, you will find practical tips for storing your collection. This time: how do you store your record collection?
A collection is often built up over many years and may involve a great deal of time, money and effort. You may have searched far and wide for that one record you had been looking for, or spent a fortune on a rare collector’s item. The most expensive record ever sold at auction fetched €300,000 in 2008. It was Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and the record contained fingerprints from both Lennon and his murderer.
Records can also bring back special memories. Do you remember your very first record, or the song that was played at the funeral of someone close to you? Perhaps you have listened to records with friends or met new people at vinyl fairs. The number of vinyl fairs in the Netherlands continues to grow. In November 2014, Utrecht even hosted the world’s largest record fair, bringing together 450 exhibitors from 50 different countries.
Choose where and how to store your record collection
It is important to store your record collection carefully as it grows. It would be a shame if your records became damaged, or if you could no longer enjoy them because you did not have enough space.
The first step is to decide which part of your record collection you want to display prominently and which records can be stored elsewhere. Based on this choice, you can find a suitable place for your collection and store it in an attractive and organised way.
Create more space
To display your record collection properly, you need enough room. To make your favourite records stand out, it helps to make a selection.
You can divide your collection into two parts: the records you want to keep visible and the records you can store somewhere else. If you do not have enough space at home for your entire collection, you can keep part of it in a secure external storage unit.
A safe and affordable way to store your records is to use moving boxes. Affordable strong moving boxes are available in sizes that are suitable for storing LPs. This allows you to create more space at home to display part of your record collection, while keeping the rest stored safely and carefully.
Create atmosphere with your record collection
Of course, a record collection is also something to be proud of. You have invested a great deal of time, money and effort into it, so you should be able to enjoy it.
If your collection is very large, you can buy special shelving units with dimensions that are suitable for LPs. This allows you to create an entire wall filled with records. These shelving units are available from retailers such as IKEA.
If your collection is still relatively small, you can also store your records in special LP cases with the same retro look as vinyl records. These are available from websites such as Beslist.nl. Stack the cases creatively to create an attractive record corner in your home.
When storing your records, always keep them upright and away from direct sunlight. Heat and sunlight can cause vinyl records to warp. You can also frame your favourite album covers and hang them on the wall.
