Pregnant? 7 Tips for Creating the Perfect Nursery

Pregnant? 7 Tips for Creating the Perfect Nursery Living tips

Is there a little one on the way? Congratulations! In just a few months, your family will be welcoming one or perhaps even more new additions. This means you will need to make space for a nursery. Naturally, you want your baby to arrive in a room that is fully prepared. Read on for a useful list of nursery essentials, including tips for furnishing a small nursery.

1. A cradle and a cot

During the first stage of life, your baby will spend many hours sleeping in a cradle. Most parents start with a cradle and switch to a cot after two or three months. There are two main reasons for this:

  • A cradle can easily be placed in the parents’ bedroom.
  • Newborn babies often enjoy feeling snug and secure. After all, they have just come from the small, enclosed space of the womb. A cradle is smaller than a cot and can therefore feel safer and more comforting to a baby.

For safety reasons, a cot must have sufficiently high sides. Most cots sold by specialist baby stores meet the required safety standards. A useful tip when positioning the cot: never place it next to a radiator or near curtain cords, cables or other loose cords, as these may pose a danger to your baby.

2. Waterproof Mattress Protectors, Fitted Sheets and Changing Mats

Your little one will not be toilet trained during the first two years. Changing mats and waterproof protectors can absorb a lot, but leaks may still happen regularly. To protect the baby mattress, use a waterproof mattress protector together with fitted sheets.

3. Changing Table with Storage or a Foldable Changing Table

A changing table is essential when furnishing a nursery, as this is where you will change your baby. Do you have a small nursery? Choose a changing table with built-in storage underneath or opt for a foldable changing table. Extra storage space is especially useful for keeping baby clothes and other essentials organised.

4. Wall-Mounted Storage Rack

Install a wall-mounted storage rack above the changing table. Before changing your baby, stock it with all the essentials you need within easy reach, such as nappy cream, nappies and baby wipes. You can also hang a clean set of clothes nearby. This means you do not have to turn away from your baby, helping to prevent accidents.

5. Rocking Chair

A rocking chair is a wonderful addition to the nursery for both parents. Even before the baby arrives, it provides a comfortable place to relax. A nursing pillow is also a practical and comfortable accessory.

6. Small Side Table Next to the Rocking Chair

Place a small side table next to the rocking chair and keep bibs, dummies and cloths on it. This ensures that everything you need is close at hand while feeding, soothing or rocking your baby.

7. Create a Practical Nursery Layout

Besides choosing the right nursery essentials, it is also important to think carefully about the room’s layout. You will often carry out several tasks in succession: taking your baby out of the cot, moving them to the changing table, changing their nappy and clothes, bathing them, sitting in the rocking chair and feeding them.

Make sure everything is arranged logically and that the items you need are easy to reach. This prevents you from having to move furniture or search for supplies while caring for your baby.

Safety should always come first. Try not to store unnecessary belongings in the nursery. As your baby grows, they will start reaching for anything within sight or reach.

Too many unnecessary items can also make the nursery feel cluttered and restless, which may affect your baby’s sleep. So where should you keep the belongings currently stored in the future nursery?

Many expectant parents choose a flexible storage unit at ALLSAFE Mini Storage. This allows you to store items you do not use regularly, such as winter sports equipment, suitcases and seasonal clothing, creating more space for the nursery.

With these seven tips, you will be well prepared to start shopping and furnishing the nursery. We wish you lots of happiness and enjoyment as you prepare for your little one’s arrival!
