Spring Cleaning Made Easy in 3 Steps

Spring Cleaning Made Easy in 3 Steps Living tips

Spring is on its way, which means it is time for a thorough spring clean! But where should you begin? And what should you do with the belongings you want to move out of the way? In this blog, you will find three steps and several practical tips to help you organise your spring cleaning and make it a success.

Looking to create more space during your spring cleaning? Click here!

Step 1: Avoid chaos and work room by room

An organised spring clean will only be successful when you work on one room at a time. Do not start moving and cleaning things without a clear plan. The first step is to decide which rooms you are going to tackle and in what order.

For example, it would not be very practical to begin in the living room, move on to the attic and then return to clean a bedroom on the first floor.

Step 2: Make room for the real cleaning

The second step is to remove everything from the room or move all the furniture and belongings to one side. This is the only way to create enough space for a thorough clean.

Once you have cleared the space, you can vacuum and mop every small corner. Take the curtains down from the rods and wash them in the washing machine. Open the windows as well to let in some fresh air.

To help you prepare fully for your spring clean, Helpling has created the ultimate spring-cleaning guide. You can find this guide and other useful spring-cleaning tips and tricks here.

Step 3: Create peace and space, both at home and in your mind

Now that the room is completely clean, the final step is deciding which items should go back into it. After all, around 80% of the belongings in your cupboards are not used for an entire year. They take up valuable space that could be put to much better use.

In addition, approximately 4% of the things you buy are duplicates because you do not always have a clear overview of where everything is stored. Divide all your belongings into three groups:

Items you want to keep

Belongings and furniture that you use every day should naturally remain within easy reach. Furniture such as sofas, beds and tables, as well as everyday items such as tableware and seasonal clothing, belong in this first group.

Items you can throw away immediately

There are always things in your home that you will never need again. These may include broken items that you are not going to repair, magazines you no longer read or unnecessary belongings that can simply be discarded.

Items you want to keep but do not need at home

As mentioned above, around 80% of your belongings may go unused for an entire year. Examples include old children’s toys or special tableware.

These items may still have emotional, financial, social, status or practical value. Seasonal belongings are also often unused for at least six months of the year. Think of your winter wardrobe, Christmas tableware, winter sports equipment, sledges and ice skates. You will probably not need these items during the coming six months, yet they still take up valuable space in your home.

Everything in this final group can be stored in an affordable storage unit. This allows you to create more space at home without having to part with your belongings.

You can rent a unit for as little as one week, starting from just one cubic metre. That is already enough space for approximately 12 moving boxes, making it an accessible option for almost everyone.

Extra tip: store your belongings in the cloud with mrBOX

Do you need more space at home but would rather not rent a storage unit? Another option is mrBOX: storage for your physical belongings in the cloud.

Just as you can store digital files in the cloud, you can do the same with physical items. mrBOX allows you to create a catalogue of your belongings, so you never have to search for them again.

Boxes are delivered to your home for you to fill with items you rarely use. These boxes are then stored securely on your behalf. Whenever you need something again, mrBOX delivers it back to you.

The app shows you exactly which items are stored in each box, meaning you will never lose track of your belongings.

By following these three steps in every room of your home, you can confidently say that your spring cleaning has been a success. You can then fully enjoy your fresh and spacious home again.

Bring on the sunshine!
