This Is How to Arrange Your Living Room According to Feng Shui! Living tips

Feng Shui, a Chinese philosophy that is more than 3,000 years old, focuses on the relationship between people and their living environment and how this environment can influence their happiness. Feng Shui is all about creating harmony by arranging your surroundings in a way that allows positive energy, known as Chi, to flow as freely as possible through your home. In this first part of a two-part series, you will learn how to quickly and easily arrange your living room according to Feng Shui principles.

The basics of Feng Shui

The ideal foundation for a Feng Shui living room is a rectangular space. Do you have an L-shaped living room? You can create a more rectangular layout by separating part of the room with cabinets, curtains or room dividers. A sheer curtain is even better, as it allows energy to continue flowing freely.

Let energy flow freely for greater happiness

Wide and open pathways in the living room allow positive energy to flow freely. Too many belongings can interrupt the flow of Chi, which means you may need to declutter the space.

Most people do not use around 80% of their belongings for the majority of the year, so there is often plenty that can be cleared away. If you do not want to get rid of these items, consider storing them outside your home, for example in an external storage unit.

This also gives you the option of changing your furniture from time to time. You could use one table during the summer and another during the winter. For just a few dozen euros per month, you can keep these belongings safely stored.

Positioning the different elements

Now that you have created enough space for Chi to flow freely through your living room, you can start arranging the room according to Feng Shui principles:

  • Place mirrors in the living room so they can reflect positive energy. However, do not position them directly opposite the front door or windows, as this can disturb the flow of energy.
  • Flowers and plants create positive energy, purify the air and offer some protection against noise and air pollution. They represent nature, life, hope, happiness and strength. Plants with round leaves are best because they help guide Chi. Place them in the corners of the room so energy can move freely throughout the space.
  • Position furniture with the backs against a wall. Sofas and chairs should ideally face one another, as this can create a sense of confidence and security.
  • A large family portrait is considered an important element of good Feng Shui. Place it in a central position in the room.

Choosing colours in Feng Shui

You can use many different colours in your living room. Each colour represents one of the five natural elements: fire, water, earth, metal and wood. Every element is associated with certain qualities, so you can choose colours based on the values that matter most to you.

Fire: wealth, passion, romance and love. Suitable colours include red, pink, orange, purple and yellow.

Water: clarity, renewal, relaxation and inspiration. Suitable colours include blue and black.

Earth: happiness and warmth. Suitable colours include light yellow and beige.

Metal: cleanliness, innocence, clarity, purity, openness and hope. Suitable colours include grey and white.

Wood: stability, reliability and comfort. Suitable colours include brown and green.
