3 Steps for Storing Your Collection of Vintage Electronics
Tips for cleanup and storage
There are several million collectors in the Netherlands. The vintage market is also continuing to grow: Europe’s largest vintage fair attracts around 34,000 visitors to the Jaarbeurs every year! Do you have a valuable collection at home and would you like to give it more space? This time on our blog, you can read how to store valuable devices such as vintage cameras.
Step 1: Choose a room for your collection of devices
As collectors, we can spend countless hours searching for a special item and often invest a considerable amount of money in it. As a result, our homes gradually become fuller until they almost resemble personal mini museums. The emotional and social value of a collection also increases over time, as it can bring back memories of earlier periods or enjoyable gatherings.
Naturally, you want to store your carefully collected items properly, while also displaying them proudly to your guests and enjoying them yourself. In principle, almost any room in your home can be suitable, as long as it is not too humid. A collection of cameras or other valuable devices, such as old telephones, record players and radios, can be damaged by moisture.
When choosing a room, do not worry too much about whether you currently have enough space for your collection. With the tips in this blog post, you are guaranteed to find a suitable solution!
Step 2: Give your collection enough space
Once you have chosen the best room for your collection, it is time to create more space. You have invested a great deal of money, time and effort in your collection, so naturally, you want to be able to enjoy it properly.
A collection can quickly take up a lot of space, as shown by the following facts:
- Indian photographer Dilish Parekh officially holds the Guinness World Record for the largest camera collection in the world, with 4,425 cameras.
- The record for the largest video game collection was held by Michael Thomasson, who collected 11,000 games.
These examples show how important it is to create enough space at home while still maintaining a comfortable living environment.
Take a good look around the room where you want to store your collection and divide the existing belongings into three piles:
- Items that must stay
- Items that can be thrown away, sold or donated
- Items you want to keep but only use occasionally or once a year
Seasonal belongings and clothing, books, reference materials, photo albums, special tableware, festive decorations and items saved for the future can easily and safely be stored outside your home. This creates more space indoors to display your valuable collection.
Step 3: Think outside the box
Now that you have created enough space in the room, you can start displaying your collection as attractively as possible.
First, make sure that your collection cannot be damaged. Do not balance valuable items on narrow edges, keep them away from heat sources and ensure that they cannot get wet. You could also place moisture absorbers in the room for additional protection.
You can store your collection of retro devices in a glass display cabinet or a regular bookcase, but you can also think outside the box!
For example, vintage cameras can be arranged creatively on a wall so that the complete collection forms the shape of a larger camera. This creates an impressive piece of wall decoration without requiring a cabinet. You only need suitable screws or wall fixtures that allow you to secure the cameras without damaging them.
You can use the same idea for radios, vintage telephones and other devices. You can also extend the vintage atmosphere throughout the room by placing stacks of old books around the space and displaying collectible items on top of them.
